What to bring

Depending on the time of year, whether it is the rainy season (cooler and greener) or the dry season (hotter and drier), guests should dress accordingly, both for protection from the elements and for comfort.

The most important items we would recommend our guests bring are:

• Sturdy, comfortable all-weather hiking shoes.
• Long sleeve light cotton garments, sunscreen and a hat for protection against the sun.
• Insect spray, lotion or cream to protect against any small biting insects that may be around in the early evening.
• For those rainy days, light wet-weather gear which allows air to circulate is preferable to plastic ponchos. A small fold-up umbrella can also come in useful at times.
• Swim gear if you plan on spending time at the pool and the beach.
• A camera if you are an avid bird and animal watcher, as well as binoculars if you can fit them in and a small flashlight.
• A book to relax with at your villa or beside the pool. We also have a small library which guests are welcome to use during their stay.
• As our lodge is somewhat remote and there are no local stores, we recommend you bring enough of those smaller items you may need to get you comfortably through the duration of your stay. Most things are now available in Puerto Jimenez. In an emergency, we can easily have anything delivered out to the lodge within a couple of hours.
• And if you absolutely must stay connected while on vacation, you're welcome to bring the device of your choice for a free wifi connection via our internet satellite system. Your device batteries may be recharged in your villas or at the lodge house.

Climate and weather

Costa Rica is a tropical country and has two main seasons:

• The dry season from mid-December until May.
• The wet (or green) season from mid-May until the end of November.

There are some minor exceptions where some places are slightly wetter and others more dry depending on location and altitude.

San Jose at its higher elevation and inland location can even be cool at nights requiring a light jacket, while at LagunaVista, on the south-west Pacific coast, it is always warm but can be humid and a little cooler in the wet season. In both seasons, we experience pleasant breezes coming off the Pacific Ocean which travel across the lagoon and up over the lodge, providing a refreshing and welcome respite from the tropical sun.

Typical tropical wet weather will usually see bright clear mornings, developing into showers in the afternoons, then clearing as evening approaches.

Generally, the best time of year to visit is December and January when everything is still green from the wet months and the days are clear and fine.
